Jurisdiction of the Jewish Community in Zemun

The Jewish Community in Zemun submitted to the Zemun Magistrate several suggestions which might unburden the Magistrate of the cases related to the Jewish population: 1) A dispute between two Jews would be resolved by the Jewish Community, but if one of the parties was not satisfied with the verdict, the party can address the city magistrate; 2) The Jewish magistrate could sentence a person to 48 hours in prison; 3) The Jews could not communicate the court‘s official for less important issues without permission of the Jewish Community; 4) If the two parties settle their dispute in the Jewish Community, it would be final. The Magistrate accepted the first suggestion providing the process was objective, allowed the Jewish magistrate to give 24 hours sentence. The third and forth suggestions were accepted with some modifications.
