The Sale of the Still for Making Brandy

Marijana Rajner stated to the Zemun Magistrate that she had sold to Isak Mojzes two barrels for making brandy and several more items for 350 forints. The sale was announced to the Christian citizens who were producing brandy, but since no one exercised the priority right, the sale was approved.

The Case of the Runaway Jewish Girl Roza

The general major in Novi Banovci brought back to the mother a girl Roza, the Jew who ran away and in Novi Banovci converted to the Catholicism. Fearing that the girl would be harassed by mother and other Jews for converting to another faith, the general requested the Zemun Magistrate to protect her and send her to a catholic priest at her request.

The Jurisdiction in the Disputes between Jewish Citizens

The Slavonia General Command ordered that the inheritance process of the estate of the late rabbi Jeruham should be concluded by the 1st of June 1764. Also, the Command informed the Magistrate that the order of the Baron Volfersdorf issued on the 26th April 1762. According to the order the minor and private disputes should be resolved by the Jewish Community and the Zemun Magistrate had to take care that the election of Jewish magistrates should be organized every year in the presence of a member of the City Council.

The Jewish Community Requested the War Tax Reduction

The Jewish Community informed the Zemun Magistrate that the number of their members had decreased therefore they couldn‘t pay 180 forints for war tax. The Community requested the tax to be 150 forints.

The Command on the Status of Jews

The military commander sent to the Zemun Magistrate a command issued by the Slavonia Command on the 4th December 1781 regarding the status of the Jews. According to the command, the settlement of Jews was still limited and their language was removed from public affairs.

The Rights of the Jews in the Army

The Slavonia General Command issued a statement regarding the request of the Galician Jews to be released of the military service or to be allowed to celebrate Saturdays and other religious holidays. On that occasion, the emperor stated that the Jews had the same obligations to the State as all other subjects, that their religion should not be insulted, that they were allowed to consume the food they requested and that they could not be forced to work on Saturdays as well as the Christians could not be forced to work on Sundays.

The Magistrate‘s Decision on the Obligations of Jewish Community

At the request of the Jewish Community, the Zemun Magistrate decided that: 1) the Jews could address directly the Magistrate regarding less importatn issues, but only if they were not satisfied with the verdict of the Community; 2) The passport could not be issued to any Jew, especially to married Jews without the knowledge of the Jewish Community; 3) the local butcher would be instructed to periodically supply with beef the Jewish Community; 4) Every Jewish inhabitant would have to give contributions for the temple, according to his assets; 5) The Magistrate would solve the problems with floods in the Jewish street.

Ten Jewish Families Requested to Stay in Zemun

The Military command informed the Zemun Magistrate that 10 Jewish families addressed the General Command asking to be allowed to stay in Zemun for another year. The Zemun Magistrate was asked not to deport from Zemun families of Jozef Majo, David Haim, brothers Amar, Mojzes Albahari, brothers Matatio, Sabetaj Abraham, Isak Almozlino, Juda Koen, Elijas Abraham, Mojzes Farhi.

The Jew Mojzes Settled with the Community Pećinci

The Canton Command in Golubinci informed the Zemun Magistrate that the Jew Mojzes made a deal with the community of Pećinci to put bars on the church windows and he was paid arranged fee. The Zemun Magistrate was asked to send Mojzes to Pećinc.

The Zemun Rabbi Requested Salary Increase

Rabbi Aleksandar Izrael requested the Zemun Magistrate to verify the agreement he had made with the Jewish Community regarding his jurisdictions and salary increase. According to the agreement the rabbi requested the members of the community come to him on the strictly religious matters and for disputes that he would resolve as a magistrate according to the valid Law.
